“Jessica Jones” Premieres on Netflix
UPDATE: “Jessica Jones” premiered on Netflix on November 20 to mostly positive reviews. If you managed to check out the new series, what are your thoughts?

Not really ever being a comic book reader, I didn’t know a thing about Jessica Jones. But several recent preview clips caught my attention, and I’ve been reading a lot about the character, and I am absolutely intrigued. I’ve always been a fan of Krysten Ritter, and what looks to be darker material should suit her talents well. From what I’ve read, her primary villain in the comics, Zebediah Killgrave, a/k/a the Purple Man, takes her down a horrible road. I wonder how much, if any, they plan on having something similar play out in the series? Count me in on November 20th when the series premiers on Netflix.
@ Sugarcoater: I did like the fact that clearly she is not the smartest knife in the book. She made mistakes like any other human being. Her super powers did not make her super-intelligent. Good thing. This is why I still feel “Casino Royal” is the best of the Craig Bond movies: because the character was allowed to make mistakes and to learn from them, like Jessica Jones. I also like – as others have commented – that she does not come with a fully formed fighting style. She has powers, does not make her a great fighter. Now having… Read more »
Jessica Jones is an idiot. That may be a bit harsh, but good lord could the character make more stupid mistakes? Though Kilgrave is supposedly responsible for all the deaths in the show, Jessica manages to screw up so often that I can’t help but see her as practically an unwitting accomplice. Just finished episode 10 and, though I’m enjoying the show (and the actor playing Kilgrave is fantastic), I’m frankly getting tired of how the plot is being lengthened out by having Jessica continue to screw up plan after plan, followed by drink after drink while looking melancholy towards… Read more »
I squealed like a schoolgirl watching this:

@ Phoxy: I did also enjoy the first couple of issues of New Avengers and Avengers. And he is one of only a handful of writers who made the Fantastic Four a good book.
@HorseWithNoName
Anything that Hickman has done outside of the proper MCU has been amazing. I highly recommend to anyone “Nightly News” and PAX ROMANA. Within the MCU, his take on SHIELD was also very interesting. He’s the closest thing America has to Grant Morrison.
@ Phoxy: no, you were not the only one in regard to Avengers Age of Ultron. Your description is spot on and my thoughts as well. I feel that Marvel Studios for what reason ever has lost its way somewhat. What I have heard about their Civil War movie does not bode well either. The series by Millar is not a good starting point anyway. I still have high hopes for Dr. Strange, though. Who would have thought that Jeph Loeb would be responsible for the much better Marvel stuff we currently see, i.e. on TV, especially on Netflix. Sure,… Read more »
Final thought before I go to bed. ABC was working on a script for Jessica Jones before it died and got picked up by Netflix several years later. Could you guys imagine Tuesday Night Marvel Night with Agent Carter followed by Jessica Jones?
@HorseWithNoName Oh, I was well aware of Patsy/Trish’s role within the show. She actually fits better here than Carol Danvers would being that she is a “cosmic” level hero that deserves her own movie so she can be rolled into the Avengers once Phase III begins. On a side note, was I the only one out there that wasn’t as high on Avengers 2 as the general populace? It just felt like a jumbled mess of collateral damage with a weird love story, an extremely odd take on domestic chores and a sibling rivalry between two sentient machines. Really, who… Read more »
@ Alex Bettinger: you are aware that a Luke Cage and then an Iron First show are in the works, right? I believe they are starting to shoot for Luke Cage soon. No news on Iron Fist though. Since they originally had only one season in mind for each show and then a Defenders movie with all of them in it, but Daredevil now getting a second season, which is already shot or close to getting done, there might be some changes to the original concept though with some people on the internet speculating that the Iron Fist show is… Read more »
People are getting obsessed with this show. I talked to someone yesterday who already watched every episode – he must have spent all of Saturday watching them.
I was so pleased to find that Luke Cage (Power Man) is a big part of the show (I’m only on ep 5, so I’m not reading this thread closely). Don’t rain on my parade if you know better, but I’m praying we get a little Iron Fist in there at some point too, if not this season maybe next one…
For reasons that remain unclear to me even now, Power Man and Iron Fist was the one comicbook I read for any great length of time when I was a kid…
You guys realize that there are actually three Marvel superhero characters on that show, right? There is Jessica, Luke Cage and Hellcat. They had originally intented for Carol Danvers i.e. Ms Marvel to be her BFF, but Patsy Walker works perfectly. I do fondly remember the old Avengers issue by George Perez in which she put on the skintight catsuit for the first time. Should have cast a redhead though 🙂
It’s not really what you’d normally describe as a “super” flick.
It’s essentially a classic detective show, the detective in question just happens to have superpowers. Gritty as hell. Which, tbf, is pretty close to the graphic novel.
Definitely lives up to the reputation Netflix made for itself with Daredevil.
@MAV
Good to hear from you. I got something in the works right now that I think you might enjoy. You been keeping up with Amy Hesketh’s Justine. Man that girl does push boundaries. Im thinking she is gonna go balls to the wall with this new Justine movie. I contributed so I’m eager to see what she has planned. The promo pics and vids are very promising.
Agree with el caballo that the first Jessica Jones episode was good, and that Krysten Ritter is great.
@Horse Thanks for the tip on the episodes of Man in the High Castle. I’ll stick with it. I did enjoy Mr. Robot it was definitely a different take on certain things for a tv series. I thought the lead actor did a fantastic job. Interesting you mention Kubrick references. I’ve always been a Stanley Kubrick fan. I haven’t checked out Manhattan yet but I will get to it one of these days. Im anxious to start JJ. I hear David Tennant is excellent in it. Former Doctor Who. It will be interesting to see his performance especially as a… Read more »
@ Phoxy: interesting to get an inside perspective. I can well imagine that it was stressful to watch. I liked it a lot for all the Kubrick references. And they did use the Beethoven Symphony they also use in one of my favorite movies from the 1930s, “The Black Cat”. I had not heard of Sam Esmail before, but man, did he put a great show on screen. Have you checked out “Manhattan”? Of course about the “Manhattan Project”. Interesting show that is also getting better after the first couple of episodes, and once you get over the fact that… Read more »
Horse brings up a good point. Great time for tv, but there is not enough time to watch everything so we must be selective with our choices. Into the Badlands is a good example, great action, but awful at everything else.
As for Mr. Robot, as someone that works in the same industry as the protagonist, it hits a little too close to home. The on-staff consultant certainly earned their paycheck with the circumstances and conditions that security engineers face day in and day out. It stressed me out to watch that show.
@ Judah: I have nearly completed the last episode of “The Man in the High Castle”. Bear with the show for the first four episodes which are a little like watching paint dry. Once you hit episode 5 it never lets up. It keeps getting better and better.
Have to agree: hardly enough time. Mr. Robot though, still holds the crown for this year as far as I am concerend. Odd title for a show, but man is it outstanding.
@Horse
Yeah I heard about the Man in the High Castle. Gonna check it out soon as well Jessica Jones. Thanks for the tip on that. So much good stuff being released right now. Just never enough time to watch them all at once.
@ Phoxy: Thank you for the review. Will start watching this evening 🙂
I completed all thirteen episodes and I can definitely say that this is completely different from anything Marvel has ever attempted. Full disclosure…do not go into this trying to compare it to Daredevil or anything else Marvel has done. This is more of a character study than “balls to the wall” action. This is largely based on the fact that Jessica Jones very rarely displayed her “gifts” in the book. What action scenes that are present are very well done. Jessica is a flat out brawler that relies on brute strength and it clearly shows during the fight scenes. Her… Read more »
Only watched the first 3 eps but loving it!
Seems doubtful we will ever see JJ in her outfit but perhaps there wil be a second series that gives us an extra treat.
I think this is a great piece of work so far
I so need to watch this. It is on my list, but will have to finish “The Man in the High Castle” first. If you are on Prime, do check out that series. The first 4 episodes drag, but with episode 5 it becomes great. I am on episode 9 of 10 and it is getting better and better. What fantastic times we live in as far as TV is concerned. Will either start Jessica Jones today or tomorrow and will post a review. But with the reviews this is already getting, I am sure it will be great as… Read more »
Full trailer! Any questions 🙂 I’d say this is how you do superheroine TV show.

Teasers above not in correct order. Also missing one. I got so confused. Just kidding.
But yeah, looking forward to this show too. Even more than Supergirl CBS.
SUPER stoked for this show. Daredevil was a triumph, and I sincerely hope this follows suit.
Yes, and after that an Iron Fist show. So looking forward to all these shows, and Daredevil Season 2.
Interesting to note: originally, before he created Jessica Jones as a brand new character, Brian Michael Bendis had wanted to use Jessica Drew as his heroine for this series, aka Spider-Woman. Marvel, knowing what he intended to do to the heroine, would not allow that. So he created Jessica Jones. So think of this as an “almost Spider-Woman” series 🙂
Also…she is married to, and has a baby with, Luke Cage. The actor playing Cage, Mike Colter, appears not only in the JJ series but also in his own series which is coming to Netflix as well – the first time that Cage will be depicted in live action. Truly a Marvel golden age.
I hope this is as good as it seems it will be …and I really like the idea of getting David Tennant to play Killgrave.
Ok, full disclaimer…I’ve been a huge fan of this character since day one. Jessica Jones started out in a comic called Alias by Brian Michael Bendis. Bendis is known for writing really heavy and dark detective books. Alias is pretty much a detective/noir book but set in the Marvel Universe. What made the book so great is that for the first time we see Marvel characters curse, abuse drugs and do other very adult things. (Seriously bad stuff!) Jessica Jones may be the most F’d up character in the entire Marvel Universe. She was a heroine that was captured by… Read more »
Cannot wait. Movie site Collider just has a review of the pilot up. Based on their review this going to be very dark, darker than even the Daredevil show, and they even call the pilot one of the best ever. Keeping my fingers crossed. Krysten Ritter seems a perfect fit.
And from what I have read, the Killgrave story seems to be fairly close to the comic.
13 episodes. I know what I will be doing on Nov. 20.
